What do we do in Third Grade?
Social Studies
- We will be studying communities around the world! We also will learn about maps, globes, and how to use them both!
- We kick off our year learning about life cycles of animals such as frogs, mammals, and butterflies. The Butterfly Man has a great assembly that takes us on an imaginative journey around the world and he shows us thousands of butterflies from his collections! Other units throughout the year are magnets, plants, weather and water cycle, and space. In the spring, the mobile planetarium will come to Delevan to do a presentation that coincides with our space unit and it is so much fun! We also use the Time for Kids magazine and NewsELA to keep up to date on current events!
- This is a big year for students this year...we have the NYS ELA and math tests to prepare for!
- Reading: Our guided reading time and writing time allows us lots of time to practice for this. We will be using RazKids and Reading A-Z during our guided reading centers. We will be reading a lot this year and it is important that you help your child by encouraging reading at home. We expect that our third graders will be reading a minimum of 20 minutes (approximately 15 pages) each night.
- Writing: Throughout the year, your child will be given the opportunity to write in a variety of ways (creative writing, letter writing, narrative paragraphs, and responses to literature). We will also work in the ELA workbook that is paralleled to the NYS test. We are working on building stamina and adding in interesting, supporting details to our writing.
- We will review addition and subtraction facts but will quickly be moving to multiplication and division! Other topics that we will cover are telling time to the minute, money, measurement, and geometry. Solving word problems and writing an explanation to support their answers will also be taught in order to prepare for the end of the year NYS math test.
